Oregano, one of the most popular aromatic herb because of its special taste and therapeutic value.
Origanum vulgare is its scientific name, and the word origanum comes from the Greek words "Oros" and "Ganos" which mean mountain and glow, therefore, oregano is the plant that glows on the mountains.It is a low shrub that reaches 90 cm in height and belongs to the same group of plants along with thyme, asparagus, sage, etc.
Oregano prefers the dry and rocky grounds and her small white or lilac flowers blossom from May to September. The flowering period is best suited to collect the oregano. Hang it in bunches in a shady place, covered with a thin cloth or tulle to protect it from dust and bugs. Then, rub the dried herb in a colander over a pan or basin to collect the shredded oregano.
It can be propagated by seeds and grafts. Excessive watering can affect the quality of the oregano.
According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite was the one who gave oregano to people to make them happier.

Apart from its widespread usage in cooking, oregano's great healing properties are well known since antiquity.
The decoction and the infusion of oregano may not be so tasty but they can be quite beneficial in stomach problems and intestinal disorders such as poisoning, colic, diarrhea, gases, while they have spasmolytic and digestive properties and also work as a tonic and appetizing beverage.
In addition, oregano relieves rheumatism and muscles pain, toothache and headache.
It helps in throat and lungs problems, while its expectorant and antiseptic properties help in coughing, asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough.
